Finnish academy trains scientists to dive beneath polar ice as warming accelerates

Polar Research Training

As the Arctic warms four times faster than the rest of the planet, the Finnish Scientific Diving Academy is training a new generation of scientists and researchers to dive beneath Arctic and Antarctic ice.

The program is focused on preparing divers to study the flora and fauna that live below the polar ice, where changing conditions are reshaping fragile ecosystems.

Academy leaders also hope the effort will help persuade the wider world that the polar ice crisis requires more research.

Climate Pressure at the Poles

The mission comes as climate change continues to warm both the Arctic and Antarctica, increasing concern about the future of polar ice.

By training researchers to work directly beneath the ice, the academy aims to expand scientific observation in some of the planet’s most remote and rapidly changing environments.

Those involved say the work is not only about building technical diving skills, but also about strengthening the scientific response to a growing polar crisis.
