Georgia and South Carolina governors stress economy-environment balance
Governors discuss growth and environmental protection
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster spoke Monday at the Environmental Council of the States spring meeting in Savannah, where environmental agency leaders from all 50 states gathered.
During a fireside chat, the governors discussed how they balance economic development with environmental concerns. They said some of their states’ largest industries, including agriculture and tourism, depend on protecting the environment.
The two also emphasized the importance of cooperation and communication between states.
Shared priorities across state lines
McMaster said economic growth, environmental and cultural heritage, and strong education all need to be part of the same effort.
Kemp said the Georgia-South Carolina border region is among the fastest-growing areas in the United States and stressed the need to manage that growth carefully.
He pointed to sustainability efforts at the ports, including electrifying cranes and trains, as an example for other parts of the country.
Commitment signed at close of meeting
At the end of the discussion, Kemp and McMaster signed a collaboration commitment focused on the water economy and the relationship between the environment and the economy.
