Kansas City committee adds $8 million for street resurfacing
The Kansas City Finance, Governance and Public Safety Committee added $8 million Tuesday to a road resurfacing project, increasing the city’s planned spending on street resurfacing contracts in the next budget year.
The FY27 submitted budget had previously allocated $30.9 million for street resurfacing contracts. With the added funding, the total planned increase for resurfacing is now nearly $40 million.
Mayor Quinton Lucas had told KCTV5 in February that cuts to other city departments could mean longer waits for repaving work. He later reversed course and introduced an $8.5 million amendment to the existing resurfacing budget.
Debate over infrastructure priorities
The budget amendments advanced out of committee, though not all members supported the changes because tax increment financing will be used to help cover the increase.
Councilwoman Melissa Robinson argued the city should direct surplus dollars to resurfacing.
- “We have these surplus dollars so we should put it into resurfacing,” Robinson said.
Councilwoman Lindsay French questioned whether focusing the money on resurfacing went far enough.
- “It goes beyond street resurfacing, so just using the money for street resurfacing [is] just kind of band aiding this infrastructure. The need goes well beyond that,” French said.
Goal of 300 lane miles of work
Councilman Wes Rogers said he would support the amendment, tying the need for resurfacing to broader citywide infrastructure demands.
- “I will be proud to support this amendment,” Rogers said, adding that the city needs resurfacing citywide.
The added funding is aimed at expanding the amount of resurfacing work the city can complete, with a target of about 300 lane miles. The budget now heads to the full council and could be taken up as soon as Thursday.
