Scientists train to dive beneath polar ice as warming reshapes the Arctic and Antarctica

Under-Ice Training

As the Arctic warms four times faster than the rest of the planet, the Finnish Scientific Diving Academy is training the next generation of scientists and researchers to dive beneath Arctic and Antarctic ice.

The program is focused on preparing divers to study the flora and fauna that live below the ice in some of the planet’s most extreme environments. The work is intended to support scientific research in polar regions as conditions continue to change.

The academy also aims to persuade the wider world that the polar ice crisis requires additional research. By expanding under-ice scientific diving, it hopes to help researchers better understand what is happening beneath the ice as climate change warms both the Arctic and Antarctica.
